Dull thoughts in a sharp world.

Facebook advertising getting better?

For some reason, I always mentally note if an advertisement caught my eye and whether I clicked through.  Though I didn’t click through on this one, I thought this was a brilliant advertising campaign by Zeki’s.

picture-4

1)  I went to the University of Arizona – background targeting

2)  I live in the same neighborhood of Zeki’s – location targeting

3)  I am male and enjoy basketball – this may be luck, but damn if that’s not spot on.

However, I’m going to Blue Light because the owner reached out to a prominent U of A alumn to organize an event.

  • I have heard a lot about using Facebook to advertise. One of the most creative techniques was a real estate investor who posted an apartment for rent on his wall and status message. To keep the message near the top of his fan's walls he simply changed an unnoticeable detail of the status message every couple of hours. Although I admire his out-of-box thinking, to me that seems like a lot of work (not to mention a bit spammy), I'd rather submit a video to Adwido and be done with it.

That was my Ad. And Zeki's is my bar. Facebook advertising rocks. In my view, Facebook is finally going to deliver on the internet's grand promise that people have been predicting since the late nineties: highly targeted and effective display advertising.

That being said, zero Arizona fans showed up at the bar. Oh well. Maybe you'll bring them next time ;)

    Hi Nick,

Great campaign. What was your click-through rate?

Love the bar so let me know next time you have an event for Arizona or anything and I'll try to organize.

Over 1% CTR for that campaign. Certainly one of the keys was using your school logo at a time when you were in a school mindset. Really just playing around with it, but I must say that I think Facebook advertising has great promise. Obviously it's easier to advertise a bar on Facebook than, say, a plumber. Facebook users are in the entertainment mindset, so a bar (and the Sweet 16) are a pretty good draw. But how about stuff we use everyday like super markets? Whole Foods should be showing local ads with local produce specials.

I am a silent (mostly silent) partner at Zeki's. We'd love to get the wildcat alums in there. Ping me if you are ever in the neighborhood and I'll meet you for a beer.
